Santiago, a city in the heart of the Dominican Republic, was founded in 1495, a few years after Christopher Columbus’s famed arrival on the island. Although it has a population of almost a million, Santiago’s rural, inland location means that although inns and smaller hotels are widely available, there are few resorts there. For resort accommodations, head for the coastal communities closest to the city such as Puerto Plata, Cabarete and Las Terranas.

Camp David Ranch Hotel Resort

Camp David Ranch Hotel Resort is located at an elevation of 2, 000 feet in the mountains of Santiago. Guests enjoy views over the Dominican Republic’s capital from their rooms, and the on-site restaurant offers outdoor deck seating with panoramic views. Thirty-five single and double rooms are available, and the room rates include a daily breakfast. Standard room features include balconies, high-speed wireless Internet access, cable televisions and air-conditioning. A concierge is available to assist with planning excursions and activities in the area.

Iberostar Costa Dorada

Iberostar Costa Dorada is an all-inclusive resort near Santiago in the busy beachfront area of Costa Dorada. The resort offers 516 guestrooms and junior suites, each with air-conditioning and a private balcony or terrace. Other standard room features include cable televisions and coffee makers. The rooms and suites have one king or two single beds; the junior suites include a sitting area and are situated close to the beach. In addition to accommodations, the all-inclusive package covers dining in the eight on-site restaurants and bars; unlimited soft drinks and alcoholic beverages; and activities including archery, volleyball, snorkeling, windsurfing and kayaking. For an extra charge, guests can play a round of golf at the nearby 18-hole course, enjoy a spa treatment or go on a catamaran trip.
