Tourism to the Dominican Republic has increased steadily since the beginning of the 21st century, as more resorts have been added along the water and between the mountains. This country, which shares its island with Haiti, gives vacations distinct beauty in its different locals, but they all offer warm temperatures and lush greenery, as well as turquoise waters and white sand beaches.
Punta Cana has become populated by vacation resorts, mostly all-inclusive. With its two unique sets of beaches on different bodies of water-it is centered between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea-Punta Cana offers an abundance of snorkeling and scuba-diving opportunities. Glass-bottom boats are also popular explorations of marine life for those who don’t want to go into the water. In this area you will also find mangroves and caves to explore. Punta Cana has its own international airport with nonstop service from major cities throughout the world.
With the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the mountains on the other, Puerto Plata is a picturesque vacation place in the Dominican Republic. This city is on the North Coast of the island and has its own airport. Here you can take full advantage of the ocean for whale watching at the beginning of each year, or white-river rafting, diving and windsurfing anytime. While in Puerto Plata, check out the Ocean World Adventure Park, which has restaurants, bars and a casino, or take the free tour at the Brugal Rum Distillery.
La Romano was once just the home of the Casa de Campo resort, but you will now find additional vacation places to choose from. This city borders the Caribbean Sea and is built amid the fields of sugar cane. If the miles of beaches, land and water sports aren’t enough to keep you busy, you can visit the Casa de Campo Marina & Yacht Club, where you will find restaurants, bars and boutiques, as well as an assortment of boats if you want to explore La Romana by water.
A trip to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, will be very different from the other places you visit on the island. Here you will find more history than water sports. You also won’t find all-inclusive resorts, but there will be plenty of historic hotels and designer shopping. Los Tres Ojos National Park is a great place to spend the day when you are on vacation in Santa Domingo. There are lagoons, caves and an aquarium to explore.
